The largest denomination in Portugal, Vinho Verde spreads over 24,000 hectares in Portugal’s northwest. The majority of the vineyards can be found along the valleys of the main rivers, where soils are rich and fertile and so able to produce wines with high acidity.
Vinho Verde is divided into nine sub-regions: Monção and Melgaço, which borders Spain, producing high-quality, fresh, mineral Albarino wines with stone fruit flavours; Lima, Cávado, and Ave, found along the coast and producing white wines made with native Arinto, Loureiro and Trajadura grapes; and Sousa, Paiva, Baião, Amarante, and Basto, which are further south where the climate is warmer, producing both red and white Vinho Verde wines.
A Grape Escape to Vinho Verde will typically be based in Amarante, a small city located around 38 miles northeast of Porto. With evidence of ancient settlements here as far back as 360BC, the city boasts centuries-old architecture and natural beauty. Wander cobbled streets and admire historical buildings such as the Igreja de São Gonçalo or stop by the twice weekly morning food market which has developed a much-loved reputation over the last 100 years.
The people of Amarante are known for being warm, welcoming and friendly. Good hospitality is at the forefront of culture and society which allows for a truly special and inviting experience.
Many Portuguese would fondly refer to Guimarães as the ‘birthplace of the nation’. It was here that Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, was born, and so this city holds an exceptionally well-preserved history. Its historical centre is UNESCO-listed, with wonderful, cobbled lanes, pretty plazas and bustling cafes. Thanks to its location in the heart of the Vinho Verde wine region, a visit here also guarantees some delicious local wines.
Given Vinho Verde’s proximity and easy transport links to Porto and the Douro Valley, why not visit both regions on one trip? Vinho Verde’s crisp, apple-flavoured wines will contrast nicely against the rich port wines, and both destinations also offer a nice variety of local architecture and stunning views.
