For the final stop of the Exclusive Northern Vallée de la Gastronomie tour, guests stay at Villa Maïa, which sits proudly on Fourvière hill: the birthplace of Gallo-Roman civilisation. Its Roman history is demonstrated through the Roman-inspired spa – the marble tiled floor is even a replica of the mosaic which was discovered on that exact spot during archaeological excavations before the hotel was built.

Despite its connections to history, Villa Maïa is a modern haven of luxury: its contemporary interiors were thought up by the same designer who decorated the houses of Yves Saint Laurent and Princess Caroline of Monaco, and its architect made sure to showcase impressive panoramic views from every angle. In addition to the spa and peaceful garden, there’s also a Michelin-starred restaurant at the hotel.
