Set along the Adriatic coastline, Dubrovnik is a city rich in historic charm and distinctive wines. Family-run producers craft unique local varieties from sun-drenched vineyards, shaped by coastal breezes and subtle minerality, making the region’s growing reputation well deserved.

In the city centre, narrow stone streets attract visitors with centuries of history. Just a short drive away, steep coastal vineyards can be found, revealing a different journey – just as rich and rewarding! Rocky limestone soils, intense sunlight and cooling sea breezes create a challenging environment for vines to grow, but such conditions produce resilient vines and grapes full of depth, flavour and character. The rugged hillsides and drops towards the sea form a unique landscape, and the wines reflect the generations of knowledge passed down through families who have learnt how to farm these demanding slopes.

Dubrovnik’s wine heritage has faced its share of adversity, including phylloxera, wars and economic hardship. Despite these challenges, local families have worked tirelessly to preserve their vineyards and protect rare grape varieties. Today, their efforts are recognised by travellers and wine professionals seeking authentic wines with a deeply rooted history.

Vines of Dubrovnik

Graševina

One of my personal favourites, Graševina is a light to medium-bodied, everyday white wine and a true Croatian staple. Widely enjoyed across the country, this versatile grape produces a dry, fresh and aromatic wine with crisp, apple-like notes, making it a popular choice alongside seafood and simple Mediterranean dishes.

Plavac Mali

Plavac Mali is the primary red wine of Croatia. This bold red wine is high in both tannins and alcohol, shaped by the intense sun and steep coastal vineyards. It has rich flavours of blackberry, dark cherry and dried figs, with layers of pepper and spice. These full-bodied wines reflect the endurance of the vines grown on rocky slopes.

Pošip

Pošip is a full-bodied white wine known for its balance and structure. Crisp and vibrant, it has flavours of apple, citrus and vanilla, complemented by subtle almond notes. Primarily grown near the coast, Pošip balances freshness with richness, making it one of Dalmatia’s most refined white wines.

Grk

Although not local to Dubrovnik, Grk is an indigenous Croatian grape worth noting. This dry white wine displays notes of white pepper, melon, herbs and pear. Extremely rare, Grk is only found in sandy soils on a single island within the Srednja-Južna Dalmacija region.

With so many beautiful spots in Dubrovnik, it’s hard to name the best scenery and views. The most memorable moments come from stepping away from the busiest tourist spots and discovering quieter, more secluded viewpoints, offering a sense of tranquility that allows Dubrovnik’s natural beauty to truly shine.

Mount Srđ offers unforgettable views over the Old Town, the iconic terracotta rooftops and the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea. From the summit, the contrast between the stones and sea creates a dramatic and historic scene where you’re able to appreciate the architecture as well as the warm golden glow if you visit during sunset.

If you’re able to, a coastline walk in Dubrovnik offers a unique perspective and captures the beauty of the rugged cliffs, hidden coves and deep blue sea. Discovering this at your own relaxed pace allows you to soak up your surroundings and discover the charm of the city. It’s a peaceful way to experience the city’s natural setting and coastal character.

Seeing the city from the water is equally as impressive and refreshing. Exploring the nearby islands and sea caves by boat reveals dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters and hidden beaches that are inaccessible by land. From the deck, you can admire the city walls rising directly from the sea, showing Dubrovnik’s coastal position. Visits to spots such as the Blue Cave allows for swimming in glowing, crystal-clear water.

Lokrum Island

Just a ten-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik Old Town, Lokrum Island offers a quieter alternative to the city. Protected as a nature reserve, the island is home to botanical gardens, a monastery, a lake which has such high salt content that it’s earned the nickname ‘The Dead Sea’ (take a dip if you wish), Charlotte’s Well and Fort Royal. With no overnight accommodation permitted, Lokrum remains largely unchanged, allowing its natural environment to take priority. It is an easy addition to a trip to Dubrovnik and a good way to step away from the crowds.

Korcula Island

Closely associated with Croatian wine culture, Korcula Island is a must visit for wine lovers. With indigenous grape varieties and ancient wine growing techniques, the island offers an insight into Croatia’s heritage. Often referred to as ‘little Dubrovnik’, you’ll find a charming Old Town, accessible beaches, and of course, some exceptional wine tasting!
