There’s so much more to Cognac than just the drink. Nestled along the banks of the Charente River in southwest France, this elegant town is home to centuries of history, world-renowned producers and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

On a recent road trip through the region, Cognac quickly became one of the highlights of my travels. While it makes for a fantastic day trip, it’s also the kind of place that leaves you wishing you had stayed a little longer. With charming hotels, excellent restaurants and plenty to explore beyond the famous Cognac houses, it’s a destination that is well worth turning into a two- or three-day stay. From arriving at the Hennessy cellars by boat to leisurely lunches beside the river, here are five experiences that I think make Cognac such a special place to visit.

1. Walk in the Footsteps of the World’s Most Renowned Cognac Producers

On my recent trip to Cognac, I was mesmerised by the number of legendary producers gathered in one place. From Hennessy and Martell to Rémy Martin and Camus, there are few places in the world where you can stroll between such an impressive collection of iconic producers! There truly are famous names around every corner.

The town itself is wonderfully compact and walkable, making it easy to spend a leisurely day exploring on foot, moving between historic buildings, elegant streets and riverside views. Even if you only have one day in Cognac, the atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit. It also makes for a great add-on for a trip to Bordeaux, which is only 1.5 hours’ drive away.

2. Arrive by Boat at Hennessy

Speaking of iconic Cognac Houses… I was lucky enough to visit the Hennessy cellars during my visit, and one of the most memorable parts of the experience was cruising down the beautiful Charente River on Hennessy’s own boat before arriving at the cellars.

It truly sets the tone before you’ve even stepped through the doors. With the historic town on one side and the famous Hennessy buildings on the other, the journey feels incredibly special. Along the way, you’ll discover the different buildings that make up the history of the House and learn about the heritage behind one of the world’s most recognisable Cognac names in a very special and unique way.

3. Enjoy Lunch Beside the Charente River In Between Cognac Tastings 

There’s no better place to slow the pace than along the banks of the Charente. The riverside is home to a handful of wonderful spots where you can sit outside, enjoy delicious local cuisine and watch boats and paddleboarders gently drift past.

After spending the morning immersed in the history and craftsmanship of Cognac production, it was the perfect opportunity to relax before continuing my explorations.

4. Explore the Château Royal de Cognac

The Château Royal de Cognac is a true marker of the town’s royal and cultural heritage. As the birthplace of King Francis I, the château has played a fascinating role in French history for centuries before later becoming home to Baron Otard Cognac.

Today, you can explore its impressive halls and ancient cellars, where thousands of barrels quietly age beneath the historic building. It’s a wonderful combination of history, architecture and Cognac production, all in one place!

5. Discover How Cognac is Crafted, From Grape to Glass

Every glass of Cognac nods to centuries of tradition and craftsmanship. A visit to Cognac offers the unique opportunity to discover every stage of the production process, from the vineyards and the creation of eau-de-vie through to distillation in traditional copper stills.

You’ll also learn about the vital role French oak barrels play in shaping the spirit’s character, and the remarkable skill involved in crafting these barrels – a time-honoured tradition that continues to be practised by many of the region’s producers today.

As well as the technical aspects, I was also fascinated to learn about the drink’s cultural significance, both in its history and into the modern day.

Whether you choose to visit a world-renowned Cognac house or a smaller family-run producer (I’d recommend doing both for a well-rounded experience!), hearing these stories directly from the experts brings the spirit to life in a way that’s impossible to replicate elsewhere. Many houses also offer exclusive bottlings or limited editions available only at the source, so you can really come away with something special.

Beautiful, compact and easy to explore on foot, Cognac combines world-famous producers with fascinating history, excellent food and a wonderfully relaxed pace of life. Whether you’re a seasoned Cognac enthusiast or simply curious to discover more, a visit here feels very special – you don’t just learn about the spirit itself, but the people, traditions and craftsmanship that have shaped it over generations.

One final tip: Be sure to make a note of any Cognac cocktail recipes you’re introduced to along the way… after all, it would be rude not to put your Cognac knowledge into practice when you get home!
