Vinho Verde

Vinho Verde is Portugal’s northwesternmost DOC wine region. It is also Portugal’s largest, extending from the border with Spain all the way down the Atlantic coastline until it meets the city of Porto. The name ‘Vinho Verde’, which translates to ‘Green Wine’, pays tribute to the lush, green region from which the wine comes, which is known for its high rainfall and fertile soils. The name itself is a nod not to its colour, but to the vibrant, youthful character of the wines that perfectly reflect the landscape around them.

Vinho Verde is best known for its white wines which are typically light in alcohol and give crisp apple and citrus flavours. It’s a DOC that has been around since the 12th century but has developed a higher quality reputation within the last decade.

A Vinho Verde Portugal wine tour with Grape Escapes promises a warm and hospitable stay, with many of our partners in this region going the extra mile to welcome visitors and show them the best of this up-and-coming, truly stunning, Portuguese wine region.
