Set on the hillside beneath the Colline du Château, in the heart of the Old Town of Nice, this beautiful ancient building was a convent for more than three hundred years, having first been built by the Clarisses in 1604. When the final nuns departed, the convent sat empty for fifty years before its brilliant reimagining into the 5* Hôtel du Couvent, which opened in 2024.
Location
Hôtel du Couvent enjoys a prime location tucked away in the Old Town of Nice. While many of the other 5-star hotels in the city can be found along the iconic Promenade des Anglais, Hôtel du Couvent offers the ideal contrast, and is a true hidden gem. Step out of the hotel and you’ll find yourself in cobbled streets lined with colourful buildings that are so reminiscent of the south of France, influenced from the city’s time under Italian rule.
Facilities
The hotel’s owners have worked hard to ensure that the calm and tranquil environment which filled the convent once upon a time remains today. The hotel’s verdant gardens are a real oasis: guests can relax in the plunge pool and lap pool which overlook spectacular views of the city of Nice and the Mediterranean beyond, as well as wander amongst olive trees, persimmons, apricot trees and lemon trees.
Given that the convent was a part of the local community for so many centuries, Hôtel du Couvent offers a unique, truly authentic stay in Nice which is well connected to the local area. A market takes place in the hotel’s courtyard on Saturdays once a month, where members of the public can buy products from producers and farmers from the Nice region. You’ll also find produce from Hôtel du Couvent’s very own off-site farm, and their legendary bread which is produced in the on-site bakery.
There are two restaurants on site (with a third just outside the hotel entrance, in keeping with the hotel’s ambition to be a part of the local community), as well as a tastefully-decorated bar, and even a Herbal Shop – visit for a personalised herbal tea concocted for you by the herbalist.
Such tranquil surroundings would not be complete without a wonderful spa. This one has been designed in the style of Roman Baths: a nod to the ancient Roman history of the city of Nice. Guests can relax as they use the thermal bath circuit as well as enjoy treatments, and exercise in the Movement Studio which offers classes rather than a standard gym for a more calm and meditative approach to fitness, all in keeping with the hotel’s overall philosophy.

Hôtel du Couvent’s 88 rooms and suites are designed to keep the history of the building at their heart. No room is the same. Think original 17th-century tiling, neutral tones, antique furniture and beautiful artworks. Some offer balconies with views of the garden, city or Mediterranean Sea, with larger apartments boasting their own kitchen and private chef for an extra-special, or perhaps extended stay. All rooms in the hotel offer marble en-suite bathrooms with bespoke amenities.
