Vinho Verde is Portugal’s northwesternmost DOC wine region. It is also Portugal’s largest, extending from the border with Spain all the way down the Atlantic coastline until it meets the city of Porto. The name ‘Vinho Verde’, which translates to ‘Green Wine’, pays tribute to the lush, green region from which the wine comes, which is known for its high rainfall and fertile soils. The name itself is a nod not to its colour, but to the vibrant, youthful character of the wines that perfectly reflect the landscape around them.
Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto (also known as Oporto) is Portugal’s second largest city. With over 150 classified monuments, it was registered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1996. The Douro Valley is home to some of the world’s oldest vineyards; in fact, the Douro vineyards were the first in the world to be classified in 1756.
