Trip Summary

What better way to explore the beautiful Alsace countryside than by bike? Our Alsace and Cycling break includes accommodation in a 4* hotel in the quaint town of Colmar, the capital of Alsace wines and one or two days of relaxed cycling with tastings throughout.

As part of the standard Grape Escapes service, we will organise your bike hire and provide you with the addresses of each visit alongside a link to a European cycling route planner, and you can plan your own specific routes. Alternatively, some guests prefer to have a cycling guide accompany them throughout the tour, and this can be included in your package (for an extra cost) – just let us know when we are planning your trip that you wish to be accompanied by a local guide.

After settling in at your hotel on day one, you may wish to explore the lovely town of Colmar, famous for its charming half-timbered houses in the area know as Little Venice or do some shopping in the quaint little boutiques. We have also arranged an introductory tasting session of five Alsatian wines which will take place in the caveau of a premium local estate.

On the morning of day two, pick up your bikes at a central location. The itinerary will go ahead in all weather conditions, and electric bikes are available if preferred. Just contact us for the supplement. Your day of cycling will take you along a pretty route out of Colmar into true Alsatian wine country and in total, you will cycle approximately 29 kilometres. You will firstly cycle for around 40 minutes along the Route des Vins, to a small, family-run Domaine, which boasts no less than four centuries of wine-making.  As well as having a full tour of the property where you will learn the fascinating history of the winery and see the centuries old wooden casks, you will taste at least four of the famous Alsace grape varieties and sample a local pastry.

You will then continue onwards to the next winery near the historic village of Riquewehr at the foot of the Vosges mountains on the Belle Côte. This producer is known as the inventor of Crémant d’Alsace, the famous sparkling wine of the region, and here you will sample this delicious wine along with two still wines and platters of cheese and foie gras. Following your tour, cycle back to your hotel at your own pace. Or if you wish, you can explore the town of Riquewehr. Once back at your hotel, time to relax before enjoying a three-course dinner served with a further two glasses of local wines.

For those booking the four-day package, we will arrange bike hire for a second day, this time discovering the scenic routes of the Haut Rhin on a 30-kilometre circuit. First stop will be in the picturesque village of Pfaffenheim, to a family run estate for a full tour and tastings. Time then to get back on your bikes where your route will take you to a vineyard which boasts an exceptional 360° panoramic view over the vineyards, extending to the Black Forest and the Swiss Alps! Here you will enjoy a guided cellar tour and taste a selection of wines, paired with local food in the spectacular tasting room with a view.

In the afternoon, homeward bound, stop at what is said to be one of France’s most beautiful villages. At an organic winery, where the grapes are harvested by hand, delight in Grands Cru wines, and visit the family estate.  At the end of the afternoon, cycle back to your hotel, where the evening is yours to do as you please. We would be more than happy to recommend restaurants for your evening meal.

Bollinger tour

We are just back from our holiday at the weekend and wanted to say thank you for putting together such a wonderful trip. We are no experts but found the tour of the vineyards really interesting and we were impressed that it was solely for our benefit. The hotel was lovely and we also used your meal guide to dine at two wonderful restaurants also.
