Contact UsThis great value, flexible break is based in the picturesque village of Riquewihr, which lies on the Alsace wine route. Not only famed for its wines, it is also of extraordinary architectural interest, as medieval remains such as the ramparts and elegant half-timbered houses with oriel windows and fountains can be seen throughout the village. Many visitors are charmed by how it looks exactly as it did in the 16th Century and others marvel at its picturesque qualities. As well as being a beautiful and romantic place to stay, it is also home to some of the region’s most prestigious wines. Even the great Voltaire owned vineyards in Riquewihr!
Staying in the heart of the village, guests will walk to two local wineries. In the morning you will be welcomed for a tasting session at Dopff et Irion, who boast over ten hectares of Grand Cru classified vines. You will have the opportunity to taste Dopff et Irion Gewurtztraminer Late Harvest. Your tastings will be accompanied by Kougelhof- a delicious Alsatian brioche, filled with dry fruits.
In the afternoon, you will enjoy a visit to a second estate, which has been owned by a passionate wine-growing family since 1680. Here, your guide will accompany you on a full tour, and will explain to you this domaine’s traditional wine-growing and vinification methods, such as their extended maceration on fine lees and slow fermentations. Your visit will conclude with tastings of the producer’s wines, accompanied by a platter of local cheeses.
No trip to Alsace would be complete without dining in a traditional winstub. Meaning “wine lounge,” winstubs epitomise the Alsatian way of life. Winstubs were originally rooms which were open to the public where wine-growers could sell surplus wines. They boast a convivial atmosphere and country-style décor with red-checked table cloths and wooden tables, where diners enjoy carafes of wine accompanied by small, simple dishes. Here, you will have the opportunity to sample regional specialities, such as Sauerkraut, Baeckaoffa and tartes flambées as part as a lunch or dinner. This is included as part of the package price and the meal is accompanied by a Cremant and a local Riesling.
