This five day break provides an indepth and comprehensive discovery of the world-famous wines of Rioja as well as those of the Ribera del Duero, which is fast gaining an excellent reputation to rival that of Rioja. The hotels carefully selected by our team are ideal bases from which to explore both region’s premium vineyards.
After a welcome dinner in your hotel’s restaurant in Rioja and a relaxing evening, an English-speaking specialist guide will pick you up after breakfast on day two and accompany you throughout the day. Our Spanish Tour Manager was born and bred in the region and not only will she entertain you throughout the day with fascinating historical and cultural anecdotes, she will also share with you her extensive wine knowledge. You will be taken to two wineries for tours and tastings including a visit of a small producer where you will have the opportunity to taste directly from the barrel. At the first estate, guests will marvel at the centuries-old cellars and enjoy a private wine tasting session, whereas the second winery is more modern, offering a complete contrast. You will then have time to participate in the traditional tapas run. Please note that the Tapas will be payable locally. You will also enjoy a tasting session of three premium Rioja wines. At the end of the day your guide will drop you back at your hotel.
On day three, check out of your hotel after breakfast and an English-speaking driver/guide will pick you up for the transfer from Rioja to Ribera del Duero. This is approximately a two-and-a-half-hour drive and we have planned a stop en-route for you. You will be taken to a small winery for a tour and tasting followed by a traditional three course lunch on site. After this delightful mid-way pause, you will continue your journey to your 4* hotel in Peñafiel. Once you have checked into your room at the Convento las Claras, take a short stroll to the town centre where we have arranged a tour and tasting at a well-regarded winery. After a full tour of the facilities, you will have a guided tasting of the estate’s wines. The evening will be free for you to enjoy as you wish.
On day four, your English-speaking driver/guide will meet you at your hotel for a full day tour as part of a small group (maximum eight people). During the course of the day, your guide will tell you all about the history of the Ribera del Duero and its vineyards, introducing you to the particularities of the region. Enjoy all that the area has to offer, stopping off to enjoy tours and tastings at a variety of wineries, from the most modern to the most tradtional, perhaps passing by a biodynamic bodega on the way. The cuisine of Valladolid is truly delicious and you will experience this for yourselves, dining at one of the wineries, where you will enjoy, amongst other delights, the local culinary speciality lechazo asado, a roasted dish of suckling lamb. After such an enlightening, fun day your guide will drop you off at your hotel where the evening is yours to relax.
