The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is often considered as one of Europe’s most breath-takingly beautiful wine regions, and our four day/three night Exclusive Break should be on your bucket list! The sumptuous Six Senses Hotel, a beautifully renovated 19th Century house, provides the idyllic base for this ultimate break in the Douro. You will indulge in the delightful flavours of both Port and Douro wines.
For those arriving in Porto by plane or train, we will arrange for a driver to pick you up and whisk you away to the Six Senses Spa Hotel. You will embark on a scenic drive through Estrada Nacional 222, which is considered one of the most beautiful routes in the world. After checking in to your Quinta Deluxe room, with either woodland or vineyard views, the rest of the day is free for you to relax and enjoy all the hotel has to offer.
The fabulous spa offers an enormous range of possibilities, from the ten treatment rooms, to the indoor pool, gym and yoga and pilates pavilion. You may wish to explore the countryside by mountain bike or kayak or take part in one of the innovative programmes offered throughout the year. The Hotel library offers you the chance to read up on the fabulous wines before enjoying a tasting in the evening perhaps.
After breakfast on day two, you will be met at the hotel by a luxury chauffeured vehicle (Mercedes E class/Viano or equivalent), which will accompany you throughout the day on a private basis. Your first stop will be at Quinta da Pacheca, a gem of an Estate and one of the first to bottle wine under its own label. Here, you will enjoy a private, guided tour of the Quinta (winery) including the vineyards and wine cellar, before tasting two DOC wines and two Port wines, paired with homemade jam and cheese. After your first initiation into the delights of the Douro wines, your driver will take you further into the valley to one of the most beautiful locations, with far reaching views over the Douro river, where you will enjoy a tour and an extensive tasting of both Douro and Port wines. After the tasting session, a gourmet lunch will be served paired with four of the Quinta’s excellent wines.
If you do manage to tear yourself away from such a relaxing lunchtime, you will not be disappointed! Your driver awaits, to take you to your next stop – a Quinta with an outstanding reputation for excellence, where a particular slope is much coveted by the Port producers of the region, after which this Quinta is named. Here, you will be free to wander through the beautiful vineyards and see the “lagares” (traditional granite tanks) at your leisure before enjoying a tasting of the Quinta’s five wines, including a Vintage Port. At the end of the visit, your driver will take you back to the Six Senses, where the evening is free for you to relax in your luxurious surroundings.
On day three, after a leisurely breakfast, your driver will take you to a nearby town, where you will visit a family-owned Quinta. You will start your visit in a small museum learning the history of the estate and the winemaking traditions that have been passed down through generations. After the visit you will taste four of the estate’s finest wines. We hope you have your deck shoes with you, as the rest of your day is all about being on the Douro River. You will spend the day on a private vintage boat seeing the Valley from an entirely different perspective, admiring the steep terraced slopes. You will enjoy a guided tasting of some of the most emblematic estates in the Douro. The tasting will be conducted by a sommelier who will accompany you throughout the visit on a private basis. A leisurely lunch will then be served on board, provided by a Michelin-starred Chef, consisting of local specialities and further wines to enjoy. After this memorable and unique experience your driver will be waiting for you to take you back to Six Senses, where you have all you need for a relaxing afternoon and perhaps enjoy a dinner on your final evening at this unique resort.
