For those looking for an affordable short break in Sicily this tour has it all! You will stay in a centrally located 4* hotel and discover the vibrant city of Palermo and the surrounding areas through wine and food! Learn how to make pizza and “gelato” like the locals and enjoy exploring the city and tasting local delicacies on a guided walking tour. You will also enjoy the opportunity to explore further afield with the second day of your Essential Palermo tour dedicated to visiting Marsala.
On day one of your Essential Palermo tour, arrive in Palermo at your own convenience and check into your hotel in the city centre. The remainder of the day will be free for you to explore at leisure. Enjoy a stroll through the historic streets where you will find plenty of cafes, shops, and landmarks to discover. There are plenty of excellent bars and restaurants to choose from in the centre and the harbour is just a short walk from the hotel.
In the evening you will join a small group of aspiring chefs in a relaxed environment to learn how to make pizza and “gelato”. Guided by a “Pizzaiolo”, you’ll learn to stretch the dough and make the base ready for fresh toppings of tomato and mozzarella cheese. You’ll see how a traditional “Sfincione Parmitano” (Sicilian style pizza) is made. Literally translated as ‘thick sponge’ this version differs from the thin-based traditional Neapolitan pizza you might be used to. Watch and learn as the Pizzaiolo shows you how to make the thick dough and, while your dough is resting there will be plenty of time to learn how to prepare your “gelato” and enjoy the wine tasting section of the evening. There will be a selection of wines for you to sample before it’s time to create and cook your pizza. Once everything is ready, you’ll sit down for dinner and enjoy everything you have prepared. A fun and memorable way to spend your first evening in Palermo.
Day two of your Essential Palermo tour is a chance to experience the essence of Sicily with a day trip to Marsala. You’ll explore ancient ruins, taste local delicacies, and immerse yourself in the island’s wine culture with a guided tour and tasting at the historic Cantina Florio.
In the morning you will be collected from your hotel and head out for the day. Your first stop will be in Castellammare del Golfo where you will sample a traditional Sicilian breakfast. After breakfast you will visit Segesta, home to ancient Greek ruins and breathtaking views where you will have time to explore the magnificent temple and theatre, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich history.
Next, you will make your way to Erice, a charming hilltop town where you’ll enjoy stunning panoramas of Trapani and the Egadi Islands. You will have the opportunity to taste famous local pastries, including Genovesi and almond treats, before indulging in a delicious lunch of Sicilian specialties.
The afternoon will be dedicated to discovering Marsala’s wine heritage with a visit to the historic Cantina Florio, one of the oldest wineries in Sicily. Tour the cellars, learn about the unique Marsala wine-making process, and sample a selection of premium wines paired with regional food delights. Your driver will return you to your accommodation in Palermo at the end of the day.
Day three of your tour is a day dedicated to exploring Palermo. After breakfast at the hotel it will be time to discover the culinary side of Palermo. Two types of tour are possible – you can either join a small shared group walking tour or why not jump aboard a three wheeled ‘Moto Ape Car’ for a private tour, (supplement applies). You will visit the heart of Palermo’s traditional markets, where together with your official guide you will visit popular food places and dive into the flavours of colourful Palermo. The tour will include stops at the most traditional markets and you will visit the Quattro Canti, an important meeting point of the main streets of the city. During the tour there will be several stops for tasting authentic local delicacies such as cannoli, typical street foods and other specialties.
Following the tour the rest of the evening will be free to spend at leisure.
Day four is departure day. Enjoy breakfast and check out from the hotel.
