This carefully designed short break offers a refined and immersive introduction to the Loire Valley, centred around the prestigious Sancerre wine region. Staying at the boutique Les Hauts de Sancerre, just a 5-minute walk from the historic town, this experience combines understated luxury with exceptional access to one of France’s most celebrated Sauvignon Blanc terroirs.
With its elevated position overlooking the vineyards and Loire Valley, the hotel provides a peaceful and elegant base, ideal for clients seeking a more intimate and less commercial wine destination. The focus of this itinerary is on quality over quantity, with a well-balanced pace that allows time to relax, enjoy the setting and gain a deeper understanding of the region’s wines.
Upon arrival at the hotel, check into your preferred room grade. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll then have the opportunity to settle in and explore your surroundings. Dinner this evening will be served in the hotel’s gastronomic restaurant, which is headed up innovative young chef Arnaud Munster. You’ll enjoy a refined, four-course tasting menu. For complete flexibility, drinks have not been included and can be ordered on the day.
On the morning of the second day of your Les Hauts de Sancerre experience, you’ll be met at the hotel by an English-speaking specialist driver guide ready for a full-day private wine tour exploring both Sancerre and neighbouring Pouilly-Fumé. This offers a broader perspective on Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing the nuances between different soil types including flint, limestone and clay, and how these influence the structure, aromatics and ageing potential of the wines. Visits are carefully selected to include a mix of established producers and smaller, characterful Domaines, ensuring a more authentic and insightful experience.
In addition to the wine, no Loire Valley trip would be complete without some excellent French cheese. Together with your guide you’ll make a stop at a local farm to sample the region’s renowned Crottin de Chavignol goat’s cheese. You’ll also have some free time for lunch during the day, and your guide will be happy to give recommendations.
For dinner this evening, you may wish to explore more of the village of Sancerre. We’d be delighted to reserve you a table at an authentic, local restaurant (payable locally).
For those wishing to extend their stay, an additional day can be included, allowing for a more leisurely morning to fully enjoy the hotel and its surroundings, followed by a private half-day wine experience in the afternoon to visit one additional winery.
