Trip Summary

Bordeaux & Biarritz Luxury Wine & Beach Break

This exceptional tour combines the buzz of Bordeaux city, time in the world famous vineyards of the Médoc and Saint-Emilion, and time to simply relax by the beach in trendy Biarritz. It offers both unique wine tasting experiences and two sumptuous 5* settings. Staying at the 5* Intercontinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel in Bordeaux and the iconic 5*Hyatt – Hotel de Palais in Biarritz, guests can expect an exceptional level of service and access to both hotels’ first-rate facilities. The exceptional wines and hotels would not be complete without fine dining of course, and the package includes two gastronomic dinners to indulge your culinary desires.

You will start your tour in Bordeaux, at the finest hotel in the city. Le Grand Hotel is located in the very centre of Bordeaux, facing the opera house and once you have checked in, you will be free to explore the pedestrianised centre of this historic city. On day two, you will be met at the hotel by an English-speaking Grape Escapes chauffeur/guide, who will accompany you throughout the day on a private tour of the famous vineyards of the Médoc (or Graves and Sauternes if you would prefer) in a Mercedes E Class vehicle (or similar). Guests are free to choose their preferred three Châteaux for tours and tastings. Options include many of the top, Cru Classé estates and the Grape Escapes Bordeaux specialists are happy to offer advice and make suggestions if you would prefer. Please note that a number of the more exclusive estates do not tend to receive visitors at weekends and some of them need to be booked many months ahead or do not receive visitors at all. We would, of course, be pleased to discuss the various options with you and contact the individual estates accordingly.

In the evening a four course dinner accompanied by a selection of fine wines, water and coffee will be served in La Tupina, a very special authentic restaurant, which was rated the second best brasserie in the world by the New York Times. Chef Jean Pierre Xiradakis’ typical south western cuisine has been renowned for decades.

After a busy day of visits and tastings, day three will be more relaxed, allowing you time to explore the vibrant city of Bordeaux. One of our guides will meet you at your hotel after breakfast to introduce you to the city and and its sights. As this will be an exclusive tour for you, we would be delighted to pass on any particular passions and preferences that you have, so that your guide can make your tour even more perfect. From music to commerce and history to wine, Bordeaux has something for everyone! After your tour, the remainder of your day will be free to continue to explore the city independently.

Your third day will conclude with another jewel in Bordeaux’s crown; dinner in the Pressoir d’Argent. Fronted by world-famous celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay, enjoy a splendid six course dinner in the opulent dining room of the Grand Hotel’s double Michelin-starred restaurant. Each course will be perfectly paired with a premium wine by the restaurant’s expert sommelier. Please note that the restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday but with four nights in Bordeaux, the meal can be moved to another night if required due to your arrival day.

On your final full day in Bordeaux, your driver/guide will return to take you out of the city again. This time to the vineyards and villages of the right bank, in particular, Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. In addition to visits and tastings at two world class producers, you will enjoy lunch at a restaurant located on the roof of the barrel cellar of one of the the prestigious wineries of Saint-Emilion, overlooking the vineyards of both Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. Your guide will also take you into the delightful medieval village which gives the appellation of Saint-Emilion its name. Here, you will have a little free time to explore the narrow cobbled streets and grab a coffee (or another glass of wine!) at one of the lovely pavement cafés.

On the fifth day of your trip, the focus moves from wine to the sea. After checking out of the Grand Hotel, your chauffeur will take you out of Bordeaux, to the Atlantic coast. Firstly, you will enjoy a visit to the Pilat Dune; crafted by wind and ocean over many centuries, this is Europe’s largest sand dune. Standing over 100 metres tall and containing over 60 million cubic metres of sand, the sight is spectacular and well worth a visit.

Oyster beds at Arcachon

Before heading south to Biarritz, your guide will take you to Arcachon bay, home to some of the best oysters in France. You will have the opportunity to sample fresh oysters at one of the traditional oyster farmer’s cabanes, overlooking one of the ports around the bay.

The city of Biarritz is located just over 20 miles from the Spanish border, and on a clear day, you can see both the Pyrenees mountains as they rise up from the Atlantic, and San Sebastián across the bay on the Spanish coast. The city offers a mix of Basque country flair and a laid back surfing vibe, whilst retaining its aristocratic links to the past. The Grand Hotel du Palais was originally built for Empress Eugenie over 150 years ago, and it is here that you will be based for the rest of the trip.

On day six, you will be met at your hotel by a private guide, who will take you on a walking tour of Biarritz to introduce you to the city and its delights, including the Eglise Saint Eugenie, the Port des Pecheurs and, of course, the beaches. In the heyday of the European monarchies, Biarritz was known as the queen of beaches and the beach of kings, and these beaches are still just as beautiful today.

The remainder of your stay will be free for you to relax, whether that be in the boutiques by day and the casino by night, or by the poolside overlooking the Grand Plage, or on one of these beaches for which Biarritz is so renowned.
