Contact UsSauternes is renowned for its unique sweet white wines. Located 55 km south of Bordeaux (approx. 35 miles), Sauternes has a lot to offer with its Grand Cru Classé Châteaux, charming village and surrounding vineyards. Sauternes wines are made from three grape varieties, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle and you can learn all about the wine making process on this three or four day Exclusive Sauternes wine tour.
Upon arrival in the lovely village of Sauternes, check into your preferred room at the 5* Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey. This luxurious establishment is located on the Grand Cru Classé estate of the Château and is a true haven of peace and serenity. In the evening, a seven course gourmet dinner paired with the Château’s wines will be served in the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant. The restaurant offers a splendid setting and Chef Jérôme Schilling loves to experiment with seasonal local products.
On the morning of day two, you will be met at your hotel by an English-speaking specialist driver/guide, who will accompany you throughout the day on a private basis. You will firstly be taken to the iconic 400 year old Château d’Yquem where you will taste the world’s most prestigious sweet wine and discover the secrets of how these highly sought-after botrytised wines are made. After such an enlightening morning you will be taken to La Chapelle, the first restaurant to be opened on an 1855 Grand Cru Classified estate. Here, a three course lunch paired with wine will be served in a charming setting. After lunch you will be taken to a second Grand Cru Classé Château in Sauternes for a tour and tasting of the estate’s wines. You will be taken back to your hotel after the tour where you will enjoy an entertaining tour of the Château Lafaurie Peyraguey followed by a vertical tasting of various vintages. The evening will be free for you to do as you please.
On day three, your guide will return to accompany you on a second day of visits. Today you will visit the beautiful Château Pape-Clément, which is a historical Grand Cru Classé Château in the Graves appellation. A representative will lead you on a fascinating tour of the estate, guiding you through the vineyards, vat-house and barrel cellars as part of a small group. You will then have the opportunity to try your hand at being a wine-maker, creating nine different blends, and bottling and labelling your favourite blend to take home with you. Following the tour, an unforgettable gourmet picnic lunch will be served in the Château’s beautiful gardens. In the afternoon, you will be taken to a second Graves estate where you will enjoy a full tour of the Château and a tasting session of their wines. You will be taken back to your hotel at the end of the day.
