Six day flexible wine tour based in Lisbon and the Alentejo Wine Region

For those looking for an introduction to the wines of Southern Portugal, this six day tour based in Lisbon and the Alentejo offers the perfect combination of staying in the vibrant city of Lisbon and visiting the surrounding vineyards plus a further 4-night stay in the Alentejo, a highly respected wine region at the forefront of Portugal’s Wine Renaissance where the focus is firmly on small independent producers.

Lisbon Wine Region

Portugal is one of our most requested regions for wine tours, thanks of course in part to the excellent wines being produced there but also because of the country’s reputation for being a safe and welcoming destination,  rich in its diversity, offering cosmopolitan cities and a fantastic climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year!  Portugal is home to a varied mix of cultures, heritage and landscapes which all come together in a small, yet unforgettably dynamic and welcoming country.

On day one of your Exclusive Wines of the South of Portugal wine tour you will be met at Lisbon airport and driven to your hotel right in the heart of the city.  After checking in at the hotel the remainder of the day will be free for you to enjoy at leisure. In the evening we have arranged a meal for you in a carefully selected restaurant, within easy walking distance of your hotel where you will enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine.

Day two of your tour has been set aside to discover the wine region named after Portugal’s capital city.  Your guide for the day will meet you at the hotel after breakfast and you will head out to the Lisbon Wine Region,  just over an hour’s drive from the city.  Your first visit will be to a boutique wine estate where the owners are focusing on creating wines produced with indigenous grape varieties, a wine project designed to contribute to local rural development as well as promoting the cultural heritage of the region.

For lunch we have organised a delicious meal at one of our favourite fish and seafood restaurants in the region where you will enjoy not only the food and wine but also the  beautiful ocean view.

After lunch we will visit one of the oldest wine areas in the region; Colares. Here you will discover the most westerly wines produced in Europe.   Colares wines are famous for their heritage, strength and proximity to the Ocean. On the slopes of Sintra mountain, you will visit one of the most exquisite wine producers in the entire Lisbon wine region.

Following your visit and tasting session at this winery your driver will return you to the hotel.  Relax and enjoy your evening in Lisbon.

On day three of your wine tour you will continue your journey into the Alentejo region.  After breakfast and checking out from your hotel your driver will meet you and you will head south, crossing the Tagus river where the floral wines of the South of Portugal await you. On the way to Alentejo you will enjoy a stop at an estate belonging to one of the oldest wine making families in the Península de Setúbal.  Enjoy listening to their stories of the winery and the region while enjoying tasting some white, reds and rosés from Setúbal paired with regional delicacies.

After this visit you will continue your journey into the Alentejo arriving at your hotel,  ideally located in the centre of Évora,  a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  You will have plenty of time to relax before heading out on foot and at your leisure to explore this beautiful historic city.  Evening at leisure

Day four of your tour is dedicated to discovering the wines of the Alentejo. After breakfast your driver will pick you up at the hotel and  you will head to Estremoz, one of the ‘white cities’ of the Alentejo due in part to the colour of the houses but also to the white marble which is found everywhere here.  The people of Estremoz are well known for their hospitality and friendliness, attributes which can be applied throughout the Alentejo. Estremoz is home to many marble extraction sites and is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.   Here we find some of the most authentic wine producers, small wineries, continuing long years of wine tradition and wine culture.

We will visit two different Wine Estates, both of which are shining examples of the passion for wine in Alentejo.  The first winery is well known for its flavoursome red wines and the second winery is run by the youngest generation of the family of wine makers who are working to preserve the most traditional procedures both in the vineyards and in the production process of their wines.

At the end of the visits your driver will return you to your hotel in Évora.  Enjoy your evening at leisure

Grapes in Alentejo

Day five is your final full day in the Alentejo and, in addition to tasting some spectacular wines you will also learn about the history and process of making the so called “Alentejo Gold”, the excellent olive oil produced here.

After breakfast your host will collect you at the hotel and you will start the day with a visit to an olive oil and wine farm.  You will learn more about the olive oil making process which will be followed by a tasting of the “gold” and also a selection of the wines produced at this estate.

Your final stop on this journey of discovery is at one of our favourite wine estates where you will be invited for a visit and wine tasting followed by lunch.  This is the perfect opportunity to pair authentic Alentejo wines with typical local dishes, embracing the knowledge and expertise you will have gained over the last few days to fully appreciate the flavours of the wines which characterize this immense wine region.

Return to the hotel and rest of the day at leisure

Day six of your tour is departure day. Check out after breakfast and meet your driver who will take you to Lisbon airport in plenty of time to board your return flight. If you are departing on an evening flight please let us know as we can happily give you our best suggestions for spending an extra day in Lisbon!
