Based at the luxurious Herdade do Sobroso Boutique Wine Resort in the heart of the Alentejo region, this 3-day Hidden Gem wine holiday offers a truly relaxing countryside escape surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and cork forests. Herdade do Sobroso combines boutique accommodation, estate-grown wines, and authentic ‘farm to table’ gastronomy with warm Portuguese hospitality for a memorable Alentejo experience.
The hotel which is surrounded by vineyards, cork and oak forests and abundant olive groves is within driving distance of Lisbon and Faro airports (approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes by road) and just under an hour’s drive from Évora and the medieval towns of Mertola and Monsaraz. For water-based activities, the nearby Alqueva lake offers fishing, kayaking and boat rides. Also available to enjoy in the area are hot air balloon rides, hiking and mountain biking, horse riding, photography safaris and helicopter excursions.
Upon arrival on day one, check into your preferred room at the hotel and make the most of your afternoon – explore the surrounding area or relax at the pool with a glass of wine in hand! This exclusive stay at Herdade do Sobroso includes a VIP welcome for Grape Escapes guests so you will feel right at home from the moment you arrive. As part of your wine holiday, we have arranged a bike tour through the vineyards, a kayak tour on Alqueva Lake, Europe’s largest artificial lake and a wine tour with premium wine tastings. These activities can be enjoyed on any day of your stay, just let us know your preference!
On the first evening of your stay, we have arranged a three-course welcome dinner at the hotel’s restaurant which serves a traditional regional menu with a modern twist. Expect to taste dishes such as wild duck rice with charcuterie, black pork cheeks with golden potatoes and Dogfish Açorda (bread soup) with poached egg followed by delicious traditional Portuguese desserts including Sericaia (Portuguese Egg Pudding) and Torta de laranja (Orange Tart). Following your meal, why not relax on the terrace with a night cap and savour the peacefulness of your surroundings.
After a relaxing breakfast on day two you have the choice to do as much or as little as you would like. Your Luxury Travel Consultant will discuss options with you, however we recommend beginning the day with an activity such as cycling through the vineyards or kayaking, and taking a wine tour in the afternoon. We will arrange for you to enjoy lunch at the hotel’s restaurant, or alternatively, you may choose to opt for a luxury picnic experience in the vineyards (supplement applies).
Herdade do Sobroso offers a host of other activities for you to enjoy such as hot air ballooning, wildlife photography safaris, a jeep 4×4 safari style tour, or boat rides on the lake. Supplements apply to these extra activities, and they must be booked in advance.
On your final evening, enjoy a delicious meal at the hotel’s restaurant.
Day three is check out day. After enjoying your breakfast and checking out of your room, you can enjoy one of the included activities if you haven’t already done so, or head on to your next destination. Many of our guests choose to combine this short break with a two-night stay in Évora, the capital of the Alentejo. Whatever your plans, we can guarantee that you will leave Herdade do Sobroso with recharged batteries and fond memories of an exceptional stay.
