Trip Summary

4-Day Burgundy and Lyon Wine Tour with a Focus on Local Cuisine

Experience the northern part of France’s Vallée de la Gastronomie on this carefully crafted short break. It’s the perfect choice for travellers seeking a taste of Burgundy’s vineyards and Lyon’s world-renowned cuisine in just a few days.

Begin in Dijon, the historic heart of Burgundy, where cobbled streets, lively markets, and a thriving food culture provide the perfect introduction, and you’ll get the opportunity to discover Pinot Noir country in the Côte de Nuits. After two nights in Burgundy, travel south by train to Lyon, a city celebrated as the capital of French gastronomy! From Lyon, venture out into the Beaujolais wine region.

With centrally located 4* superior hotels, train connections between cities, and expertly guided group tours, this short itinerary offers an accessible way to explore the northern stretch of the Vallée de la Gastronomie.

On day one of your Burgundy and Lyon wine tour, arrive in Dijon and check in to your carefully selected 4* hotel in the heart of the historic centre, Hostellerie du Chapeau Rouge. Combining character, comfort, and convenience, your base in Burgundy’s capital puts you within easy walking distance of cafés, boutiques and the city’s lively covered market.

Spend the afternoon at leisure – perhaps with a gentle stroll through the medieval streets or a visit to the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin. In the evening, your gourmet journey begins with a welcome dinner at a highly regarded local bistro. Here, you’ll enjoy a menu of seasonal Burgundian classics – think oeufs en meurette, boeuf bourguignon, and artisan cheeses – paired with a carefully chosen glass of local wine. After your meal, take a short walk or a leisurely stroll back through Dijon’s illuminated streets to your hotel, where you can unwind and settle in for the night.

After breakfast on day two of your Burgundy and Lyon wine tour, join your small group Burgundy wine tour for a full-day exploration of the Côte de Nuits, one of the most prestigious Pinot Noir regions in the world. Travelling in a comfortable minibus as part of a small group, your guide will introduce you to the landscapes and traditions that shape Burgundy’s wines.

Enjoy two guided visits and tastings at family-run Domaines, sampling both reds and whites that express the region’s unique terroir. Between tastings, stop in a nearby village for free time and the chance to enjoy lunch at a local café or bistro (payable locally). In the late afternoon, you will return to Dijon, with the rest of the evening free to explore further or simply relax at your hotel.

On day three of your Burgundy and Lyon wine tour you will check out after breakfast and take the scenic train journey south to Lyon (approx. 2 hours). Upon arrival, you will be able to leave your bags at your centrally located 4* hotel, Hôtel Globe et Cecil, and take a stroll to explore the city’s riverside walks and the atmospheric lanes of Vieux Lyon, perhaps stopping at a local café for lunch or a light bite.

In the afternoon, join a wine tasting tour into the picturesque Beaujolais region, a landscape of gently rolling hills, golden stone villages, and neatly tended vineyards. Travelling in a comfortable vehicle as part of a small group, your guide will share stories of the region’s history and explain how the Gamay grape thrives here.

You’ll visit an authentic, family-run estate, where the winemaker will guide you through a tasting of Beaujolais wines alongside some local charcuterie and cheeses. You will return to Lyon and this evening you will enjoy dinner at a traditional Bouchon Lyonnais. Think red-and-white checked tablecloths and hearty local dishes that make Lyon France’s gastronomic capital. After your meal, make your way back to your hotel to relax and prepare for the next day’s adventures.

Day four is your final day. After breakfast, check out of your hotel. Depending on your travel plans, you may wish to stay a little longer in Lyon – strolling along the Rhône, exploring Vieux Lyon’s cobbled lanes, or visiting the city’s famous food markets – before continuing your onward journey.  If you would like to extend your stay, we will be delighted to create a bespoke arrangement –  from extra nights in Dijon or Lyon to additional wine tours in Burgundy or Beaujolais – tailored to your requirements.
