The Wines

Prosecco Wine

Fantastically fruity and fizzy, Prosecco sales have boomed astonishingly over the past few years. This Italian sparkling wine is both light and refreshing, and its simplicity is perhaps what makes it such a popular choice for aperitifs, celebrations, and just about any other occasion.

The Prosecco Grape

Unlike Champagne, which can be made from several grape varieties, Prosecco is traditionally produced from the Glera grape. This white grape is responsible for much of Prosecco’s distinctive fresh and fruity character, with typical aromas and flavours of white peach, pear, and apple.

Slightly lower in alcohol than many other sparkling wines, Prosecco is particularly popular for its light, refreshing and easy-drinking style. It is also a more affordable alternative to Champagne, making it an appealing choice for both casual wine drinkers and more discerning palates.

How is Prosecco Made?

Another key difference is the way that the wines are made. Rather than undergoing its second fermentation in the bottle, Prosecco is generally fermented in large pressurised tanks before being bottled.

The result is a fresh, youthful sparkling wine that is intended to be enjoyed relatively young. It is also a more affordable alternative to Champagne, with wine lovers particularly drawn to its light, refreshing, and easy-drinking style.

The level of sparkle can also vary. The “fizz factor” in Prosecco can either be foamy Spumante, which can be compared to Champagne, or the less-expensive, lightly sparkling frizzante.

Prosecco Quality & Classifications

Prosecco was awarded DOC status in 1969, helping to establish regulations designed to protect the quality and reputation of the wine.  In 2009, the region was elevated to DOCG status, with 19 communes now producing the finest Proseccos.

Within this area, some of the most highly regarded wines carry additional Cartizze or Rive classifications, which further distinguish their origin and quality. Perhaps the most prestigious and sought-after wines are those from Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze, often considered the jewels of Italian sparkling wine.

The tiny Cartizze cru produces wines of exceptional quality, typically offering a richer, more concentrated and gently sweet character. They make a wonderful accompaniment to desserts and sweet pastries, but can also pair beautifully with savoury and mildly spicy dishes.
